Stamp duty and IVAFE calculator

How much does an Italian tax resident pay each year on the value of their investments? With an Italian broker it is the 0.2% stamp duty (bollo), withheld by the broker; with a foreign one it is the IVAFE, also 0.2%, which you pay with your tax return. The calculator estimates both, with the €34.20 on the account and the IVCA on crypto-assets.

Who pays it

The Italian broker works out the stamp duty and charges it to the account, usually at year end or with each statement: you neither declare nor pay it yourself.

Stamp duty on securities0.2% of the value at period end, no cap for individuals

Stamp duty with an Italian broker

On a securities account with an Italian intermediary, a stamp duty of 0.2% a year is due on the market value of the financial products, worked out at the end of the reporting period. For an individual there is no cap. The broker works it out and charges it: you do nothing.

The linked current or deposit account pays a flat €34.20 a year instead, due only when the average annual balance tops €5,000.

IVAFE with a foreign broker

If your securities are with a foreign broker that does not act as an Italian tax intermediary, you pay the IVAFE instead of the stamp duty: still 0.2% of the value, but in proportion to the days you held each security and to your share of ownership.

The value is the market value at the end of the year, or at the end of the holding period if you sold earlier. The IVAFE is declared in section RW of the Italian tax return and paid with the F24 form, by the same deadlines as the income tax balance.

On foreign current accounts the IVAFE is €34.20 a year, in proportion to days and share, and is not due when the average annual balance does not top €5,000.

IVCA on crypto-assets

Since 2023 crypto-assets pay a 0.2% annual tax on their value, the IVCA, in proportion to the holding period. The calculator adds it when you enter a crypto value.

Reading the result

  • The calculation uses one value for all securities: with a foreign broker, if you bought or sold during the year, the exact sum is done security by security with the days of each.
  • With an Italian broker the period is the whole year: if the account was opened or closed during the year, the broker lowers the duty in proportion.
  • The rate used is 0.2%: for products held in tax havens the IVAFE is higher.

Frequently asked questions

Is stamp duty due on government bonds too?

Yes: the 0.2% applies to every financial product in the securities account, government bonds included. Italian postal savings bonds are exempt when their total redemption value does not top €5,000.

With a foreign broker, do I pay the IVAFE myself?

Yes, when the broker does not act as an Italian tax intermediary. The IVAFE is then declared in section RW of the tax return and paid with the F24 form, together with the income tax balance.

If I sell everything mid-year, do I pay the IVAFE for the whole year?

No: the IVAFE is in proportion to the days held, on the value at the end of the period you held the securities. Held 182 days, you pay about half the annual tax.

The account is joint: how is it worked out?

With a foreign broker each holder declares the IVAFE on their own share: enter your percentage, for example 50%. With an Italian broker the stamp duty is charged once on the account.

Is stamp duty a tax on gains?

No: it is paid on the value of the investments, even at a loss. That is why it weighs on the return: about 0.2 percentage points a year.
